Nine Things You Need to Know Before Seeing ‘X-Men’

Was Dr. 90210 an On-Set Adviser?  The scene employs a revolutionary new computer technique from Lola Visual Effects that painted over the veteran actors’ faces making them appear 20 years younger.  With a “Magneto” prequel in the works, McKellan has said he’d like to play a young Eric Lensherr himself and have his entire performance similarly painted over.  How long, one muse wonder, until every actor is negotiating a touch-up into their contracts?

Total Film – X3 The Last Stand Exclusive!

It’s not just the showpiece moments that use state-of-the-art effects in “The Last Stand”, either.  One flashback scene finds Magneto and Xavier visiting a young Jean Grey.  “Patrick and I are very pleased with that scene”, says a relaxed Sir Ian McKellen.  “It takes place 20 years ago and we both appear 20 years younger on screen.  Being a couple of vain old timers, we’re very happy with that!  They put our faces through a process which has an effect like airbrusing.  It’s cutting-edge technology that’s never been used in a film before.  It’s wrinkle-lifting film magic!”

The rejuvenation effect Lola.  “X-Men” introduces a nifty piece of new FX software that could be much in demand in the future: the rejuvenation effect Lola, which FX master John Bruno helped to perfect, makes actors look younger. It was used for a subplot involving the youthful incarnations of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, making them 20 years younger. “They loved it,” Shuler Donner says.
